Understanding Distance Education According To The Experts

Distance education system is generally based on the separateness between students and teachers in space and time, utilization (package) materials designed and produced systematically, the existence of communications is not continuous (non-contiguous) among students with students, tutors, and educational organizations through a variety of media as well as the life of the provision and monitoring of intensive education.

Various scholars have tried to define the distance education according to the perspectives of each.   Some of the definitions given to the experts explain the system of distance education is:

A form of independent learning is systematically organized in which the learning material representation, counseling, and the provision and monitoring of student learning success are carried out by a group of teachers who have the responsibility mutually different. A method to convey knowledge, skills, and attitudes are maintained based on the application of the concept of ‘ Carousel ‘ (division of labor), the principles of the Organization, and the utilization of the media extensively especially in reproduction learning materials so as to allow the occurrence of the learning process in students in high numbers at the same time they are wherever they are. The industry is a form of learning and teaching (Peters, 1973).

A method of learning where teaching took place separately from the process of learning so that the communication between teachers and students should be facilitated with printed materials, electronic media, and other media (Moore, 1973).

If observed, then from a variety of definitions of distance education system look of equality or difference.  Each description reflects the things or concepts that became the Foundation of the thought of each expert.  The given story of Peters has the main idea of educational industrialization process, whereas the definition of Moore (1973) suggested transaction distance and autonomy of the students as the central concept.  While the description of Holmberg (1977) may be the fundamental concept of the independence of students, communication is not continuous (non-contiguous) and guided didactic conversation, while Keegan (1980) emphasizes the existence of integration of learning activities and teaching as the concept of limits are given.
